Hi. I’m Margaret and I live in the village. I’m a retired teacher from East Ayton Primary School.
From my own days at primary school, I remember being taught sewing and knitting, but sadly at Grammar School, I was in the class that had to learn Latin instead of art, needlework, and cookery. I was not pleased. SO …
CARPE DEUM!!
Once the family had fled the nest, I attended night school classes and workshops for watercolour and oil painting, silk painting, all kinds of felting, fused glass, batik, and MOSAICS – which is now my MOST favourite medium. There’s a very talented mosaic teacher in Otley (Frances Taylor – www.mosaicmania.co.uk ) who runs workshops, and she has taught me all I know about creating with mosaic tiles, both indoor and outdoor items.
Since my first mosaic workshop in 2018, I have created over 100 different mosaic pictures (www.wool-n-art.co.uk to see my work). More recently, I bought a jig-saw and my son made me a woodworking bench, so I can now cut different shapes from MDF. My latest new venture is creating 3D mosaic pictures, often adding hooks for key storage.
The drawback to working with mosaic tiles? There are so many different colours, textures, and sizes that it’s hard to resist buying them all! I also try to incorporate broken plates, cups etc. in my work, and friends often turn up with their casualties!
I also enjoy painting on second hand wellies, rather than painting on 2D canvases! My favourite topics for artwork would have to be OWLS, PUFFINS, POPPIES, and IRISES, and over the years, I have created them in many different media.

More artists should try being honest about how rubbish they used to be. ...more
